SMALL-TOWN DOCTOR LOOKS BACK AT CAREER (Macon Telegraph, May 4, 2008)
REYNOLDS --For almost 50 years, Dr. Edwards Whatley was first in the receiving line when folks in Reynolds arrived in the world.

He was the town doctor and the unofficial welcome wagon. He delivered almost 2,000 babies - boys and girls, blacks and whites, rich and poor, twins and triplets. He delivered all 10 young'uns from the same Taylor County family.

He watched them take their first breath, heard their first cry and cut so many umbilical cords they could have called him Edwards Scissorhands.

Last weekend, several of his "babies" came back to salute him as grand marshal at the Georgia Strawberry Festival in Reynolds. They walked behind him in the parade wearing blue and pink T-shirts that read: "Special Delivery by Dr. Whatley."

By honoring Doc Whatley, the festival could just as well have been honoring every small-town doctor in America. Now retired and in an assisted-living facility in Rome, Whatley practiced medicine during what he calls the "Golden Years."

"I went from the days of treating people with penicillin and sulfur to when it took more time to do the paperwork than to see the patient," he said.

He never specialized. He was a doc of all trades, handling everything from X-rays to anesthesia. He carried his black leather bag as if it was an extension of his arm. He removed gall bladders, performed emergency appendectomies and sometimes rode with his patients in a hearse that did double duty as an ambulance.

He helped operate the 16-bed Sams & Whatley hospital. He kept office hours and often made house calls in three counties before his head hit the pillow at night. Country folks sometimes paid him in eggs and tomatoes.

He once saved the life of a 5-year-old boy who was choking on an apple. On a dark and stormy night, he used a flashlight so he could see to stitch up a man injured in a chain saw accident.

He is 85 now, a widower who continues to recover after his stroke. He lives in Rome near his son Jim, an internist and one of his four children.

His father, Clifford, was a veterinarian in Reynolds. His mother, Mary, raised five boys and was voted "Mother of the Year" by a statewide organization.

As a student at Emory University, he flipped a coin to decide whether to study chemistry or go to medical school. Heads won. He did his residency at Bowman Gray (Wake Forest) in Winston-Salem, N.C. He served in the Army in World War II, married his wife, Rosemary, and returned home to practice medicine in Reynolds.

"I sometimes would ride with him on house calls," said Jim. "He knew every road, even the dirt ones. One time he pointed and told me that was the last mailbox we were going to see for a while. Everything out there was R.F.D. (Rural Free Delivery). He went a lot of places where people had to drive 5 miles just to get to their mail."

In his office, he examined patients and demonstrated patience until every cough had quieted and every fever had broken. In those days, doctors often reused the same syringes. Just boil to sterilize it. He had no fancy instruments. Sometimes, his only tools of the trade were a blood pressure cup, stethoscope and thermometer.

"If I had it to do all over again, I would do it the same way in the same place and in the same era," he said.

The world has made countless medical advances. In many ways, though, the golden way was the best.
